You never know what you'll find

Dear friends, Sometimes I curse this all-encompassing device called the "laptop." It may be one of my best friends, my source of income and the reason I rarely have to step foot in a bank, but it's also the cause of some pretty severe eye strain, headaches and sickness sometimes. It's called Computer Vision Syndrome. Quelle chose! To be so brutally treated by a device I love so much. At times it seems I can't put the thing away - after writing a finely-worded treatise on the current state of grocery store dried cat food, I'll often find myself wandering the vast alleys of the world wide web, looking for information on everything from catnip to ancient musical instruments. The result? Red, watery eyes, light sensitivity, and a grievous headache right in the spot I usually love to give and receive headbonks. Sometimes my neck and shoulders hurt, too. This is no good, friends. What's a freelance internet-addicted cat to do? There are actually a few ways to deal with this problem, and a lot of them have to do with self-restraint. I'm sure you know that when it comes to life's pleasures, cats are not famous for their self-restraint. I am no exception, so how can I expect to wean myself off of long hours of screen-staring? With a gadget, of course. I've just installed EyeDefender on my computer, and it's going to do the work for me by manipulating my intense devotion to machines and cool software. Hurray! (Or hooray, or huzza, even.) What's this little program do, you ask? Basically it's timing me, and at intervals of 25 minutes, it's going to tell me to get the hell off the computer for 5 minutes. The screen will blank out and then display a few different moving patterns designed to get my eyes moving, assuming I haven't wandered off somewhere. The latter is ideal. What else can we do to soften the strain on our poor, beautiful eyes while still making a living AND having fun on the computer? Let in some natural light. Experts suggest putting the computer perpendicular to a window, so that the natural light can hit the screen as well as your long-suffering eyeballs. And that button with the picture of a big sun, next to the one with the little sun? Stop pressing it. Turn the brightness down a notch or two - it can make a big difference at the end of the day. I've got 3 minutes left before break time, so I suppose I'll go putter in the garden for a few minutes. I think there are some juicy little geckos calling my name. Take care!
